U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA or sometimes USEPA)

United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA or sometimes USEPA) is a federal government agency of the United States charged with protecting human health and the environment by writing and enforcing rules based on laws passed by Congress.  The EPA has been proposed by President Richard Nixon and began operation December 3, 1970, after Nixon filed a plan to Congress and the reorganization has been ratified by the committee hearings of the House and Senate.  The Agency is headed by its director, appointed by the president and approved by Congress. The current director is Lisa P. Jackson. The EPA is not a department of the firm, but the administrator is normally given cabinet rank. The agency has about 18,000 employees.
