The European Environment Agency (EEA), agency of the European Union devoted to establishing a surveillance network for monitoring the European environment. It is governed by a board composed of representatives of the Governments of 32 member countries, a representative of the European Commission and two scientists appointed by the European Parliament, assisted by a committee of scientists.
It was founded in EC Regulation 1210/1990, amended by EC Regulation 933/1999 and EC Regulation 401/2009, and began operations in 1994. And 'headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Jacqueline McGlade is the current Director.
As the body of the EU, Member States of the European Union automatically members, but a Council Regulation establishing the condition that other States may join by means of agreements concluded between them and the EU.
It 'was the first EU body to open the accession of 13 candidate countries (before 2004 enlargement).
In February 2009, which has 32 members:
* 27 EU countries
* 3 members of the European Economic Area: Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein
* 1 The EU candidate country: Turkey
* Switzerland on April 1, 2006
As of October 2008 is 172 staff members on the site EEA.
