Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA)

The Agency Scottish Environmental Protection (SEPA) is the regulator of the environment of Scotland.  Its main role is to protect and improve the environment of Scotland. SEPA does this by helping business and industry to understand their environmental responsibilities, enabling customers to comply with legislation and good practice and achieve the many benefits of good environmental practices. One way is to SEPA NetRegs environmental advice service. It protects society by regulating activities that can cause harmful pollution and by monitoring the quality of Scotland's air, land and water.  The rules implementing that also includes storage, transportation and disposal of radioactive materials.

SEPA is a non-departmental public body (NDPB) responsible by Scottish Ministers, the Scottish Parliament. SEPA was established in 1996, Environment Act 1995 and is responsible for nature conservation in Scotland.

SEPA is a semi-public or quasi-governmental organization which is funded by the government yet acts independently of government. SEPA is a member of SEARS (Environmental Services and Rural Scotland).
