The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is the department responsible for environmental protection, food production and standards, agriculture, fisheries and rural communities in the UK. Statements concordats framework agreement for cooperation between it and the Scottish Government, Office of the National Assembly for Wales and representatives of the Assembly of Northern Ireland , which assigned responsibilities these issues in their respective nations. DEFRA also leads Britain to the EU in agriculture, fisheries and environment and other international negotiations on sustainable development and climate change, even if a new Department of Energy and Climate Change was created October 3, 2008 to assume the ultimate responsibility.
