United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) coordinates United Nations environmental activities, to help developing countries to implement the environment and practices. It 'was created as a result of the United Nations on the Human Environment in June 1972 and its headquarters is located in a residential area in Gigiri, Nairobi, Kenya. UNEP also has six regional offices and national offices.
Its activities cover a wide range of issues, the environment, marine and terrestrial ecosystems. It has played an important role in the development of international environmental agreements to promote environmental science and information and illustrates how they can work together on a policy that has been developed and implementation of national governments and regional institutions, and work with environmental organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs). UNEP has also been active in finance and implement environment-related development projects.
UNEP has assisted in the development of guidelines and treaties on issues such as international trade in hazardous chemicals, transboundary air pollution and pollution of waterways.
World Meteorological Organization and UNEP established the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 1988. UNEP is also one of several executive agencies for the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol, and is also a member of the UN Development Group.
